So, What Exactly Are Swarovski Crystals ?

Swarovski Crystals are well-known for their sparkling brilliance and lustrous sheen. These beautiful crystals are actually created from a type of lead glass, which contains high levels of refractive oxide minerals.

This unique composition gives Swarovski Crystals their characteristic sparkle, which is much brighter than that of cubic zirconia.

Swarovski Crystals are actually closer in composition to gemstones, with a higher refraction index than true crystal.

In fact, genuine diamonds have a refractive index of 2,417, while a Swarovski Crystal has a refractive index of 2,176, close to but somewhat less than a diamond.

In addition to their unparalleled beauty, Swarovski Crystals are also extremely durable, making them ideal for a wide range of applications. From jewelry to chandeliers, Swarovski Crystals add a touch of luxury to any setting.

Swarovski – The Company

Swarovski is a world-renowned producer of high-quality crystal jewelry. Founded in 1895 by Austrian jeweler, Daniel Swarovski, the company has a long history of crafting beautiful and innovative pieces.

The company has been family owned for over 120 years.

Swarovski Crystal is prized for its exceptional clarity and brilliance, and the company’s skilled designers are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this material.

Today, Swarovski’s line of jewelry includes everything from delicate pendants to statement earrings, and their pieces are worn by celebrities and fashionistas all over the world.

Swarovski Crystal jewelry is worn by celebrities and royalty alike, and has even been featured in blockbuster films such as Titanic and The Hunger Games.

Why Is Swarovski Jewelry So Popular ?

There are plenty of reasons why Swarovski Crystal jewelry is so popular.

First of all, the brilliance of the crystals is unrivaled. They really do sparkle and shine like no other crystals on the market.

Secondly, Swarovski has become a very popular brand, thanks in part to the endorsements of celebrities like Madonna, Demi Moore and Britney Spears.

Swarovski also offers great value for money. You can get a piece of beautiful, well-made jewelry without having to spend a fortune. So it’s no wonder that Swarovski Crystal jewelry is so popular among fashion-conscious women all over the world.

Finally, the company offers excellent customer service and stands behind its products, making it easy for customers to find the perfect piece of jewelry.

So, Let’s Talk About Quality

When it comes to Choosing jewelry, sparkling Swarovski Crystals may come to mind. However, you might wonder if cubic zirconia is a wiser choice due to its affordability.

It is important to know the qualities of both crystals before making a decision. Compared to cubic zirconia, Swarovski Crystals are harder and have more brilliance because they are precision cut.

The hardness of the Swarovski Crystals makes them more durable and less likely to scratch.

In addition, the brilliant facets on a Swarovski Crystal refract light better than cubic zirconia which gives the jewelry a brighter appearance.

For these reasons, Swarovski crystal jewelry is of higher quality than cubic zirconia.

Is There A Downside ?

Swarovski Crystals have a Mohs hardness of between 6 and 7 meaning it is harder than most crystal but is still subject to scratching and chipping if not cared for properly.

Like any jewelry, Swarovski Crystals will tarnish under the right circumstances so should be cleaned regularly with a soft cloth.

Exposure to harsh chemicals and direct sunlight can cause fading.

It is not recommended that you wear your Swarovski Crystal jewelry while in the shower or bath as the exposure to shampoos and conditioners could dull the crystals.

You should also not wear your Swarovski Crystal Jewelry while swimming as most swimming pools contain chlorine which could damage them as well.

Avoid contact with commercial jewelry cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol as these liquids can damage the crystals as well as the delicate plating.

Founded in 1895, Swarovski is a family-owned company that has become synonymous with quality and style.

Founded by Daniel Swarovski, the company began as a small workshop in Austria and quickly rose to popularity thanks to the exceptional quality of its crystal products.

Today, Swarovski Crystal Jewelry is a global brand with a strong presence in more than 170 countries.

The company’s commitment to quality has made it a leader in the world of fashion and jewelry, and its products are revered for their beauty and durability.

  1. This review of Swarovski jewelry has answered many questions that I had about the brand of jewelry. I always thought that cubic zirconias were used in the manufacturing of Swarovski jewelry, so it was interesting to learn that the shining crystals are actually a type of lead glass.

Very helpful advise that one should not swim or shower while wearing your Swarovski jewelry as the chemicals might make the crystal dull.

  2. Swarovski jewelry is a highly competitive brand in the fashion industry.

They add gloss and truly can be very colorful or white.

These durable stylish products are an addition to your workplace outfit as well as to special occasions.

They can be great gifts for graduation, weddings, birthdays, mother’s day, and holiday gifts.

They are not very highly-priced compared to real gemstones.

Like a lot of other things in life, you really have to take care of them as per the instructions.

Cleaning and taking proper care can last them long.

    1. Thank you for commenting Anusuya on our recent post about Swarovski Crystal Jewelry.

I agree that any piece will make an excellent gift for any lady in your life.  The cost for most pieces is not prohibitive as well.

Like any piece of fine jewelry, they must be taken care of, cleaned regularly, and one must be careful not to expose them to harmful chemicals and they will remain beautiful for a lifetime.

  3. I have a few jewelry-philes in my life!  I have a feeling they would love Swarovski Crystal Jewelry.  I assume that a refractive index comparable to a diamond means they have a sparkle comparable to a diamond!  Sounds like you have a high quality, durable and beautiful material that is actually affordable for regular people.  I appreciate the information about the properties of this material so we can appreciate its superiority to cubic zirconia.  You say that it is made from Lead glass.  This may be a silly question- but that does not mean that it contains any of the toxic properties of real lead, right?  Just double checking. 🙂

    1. Hi Beth, yes, you are right about the refractive index. It is actually a measurement used to determine exactly that, the amount and kind of light reflected by the stone.  The Swarovski crystal jewelry as you have read in our article is very close to that of a genuine diamond.

You ask a very good question about the lead glass used to make the crystals used in the jewelry. It is used because of the clarity it provides. It as you may know, was used in a lot of very old glassware.

Is it safe to drink from, ABSOLUTELY. Lead glass contains typically 18 – 40% lead oxide (PbO). Modern lead crystal will contain usually in the neighborhood of 24% PbO.

  4. I got my very first Swarovski from my “well-off” best friend on my 40th birthday. It’s a pendant and I love it so much because I’ve always wanted to have one but couldn’t afford it. 😊

Now I know why Swarovski is quite pricey, and it’s because of its quality. Thanks for the tips on cleaning and maintenance. Had I not read from your review that it should not come in contact with soap and other  chemicals I would have made the mistake of not taking it off before stepping into the shower.

    Thanks a lot.

    1. Hey Alice, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your comments. We are glad you were able to take away some helpful information.

Yes, the Swarovski Crystal Jewelry is very beautiful for sure. It was the founders intention to provide ‘diamond like’ jewelry that most people could afford. I would say that he accomplished his mission, in spades.

      All the best…

  5. I love the Swarovski brand and it has been quite popular in my city (and I think they are still). My mom used to buy and store a lot of these crystals, just to put them out to look at. I’ve received gifts from friends 10+ years ago and they still look very bright and clean. I’ve not thought of cleaning them regularly and now that I’ve come across reading, I think I should get them out and clean them properly. I’ve also been interested to know if Swarovski brand has a second-hand market tho’?

    1. Hi Mari, we appreciate you stopping by and leaving your comments. So glad you were able to find some useful information.

You are right, Swarovski Crystal jewelry is very popular and becoming more so every day. They have some absolutely stunning pieces.

In regard to a second hand market, you will find a lot of Swarovski crystals on ebay and other similar platforms.

Here is a link if you are interested to take a look…

      Take care,

  6. My girlfriend had been researching Swarovski crystals vs cubic zirconia. This is a perfect article for her to check out. She’s going to love the direct comparisons and pros and cons you listed. Thank you!

    1. Hey Eric, Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your comments. We appreciate it.
We are pleased that you found the information useful.

Swarovski Crystals are becoming very popular as they are so close to real diamonds in brilliance, and so much less expensive.

  7. Hello, William. It made me happy to review your website. I can relate to it in so many ways. First, the synergism between you and your wife, Lett, is appealing on a personal level. Beyond that, her talents and yours, together, would naturally mesh well in any business project. I commend you both for understanding and expressing that. I love your couple’s photos.

There may not be any niche that appeals to me more than fashion and beauty, jewelry and accessories. I subscribe to more than one site like that, e.g., Stella Dot and Stauer. And I am particularly tuned into lab-grown diamonds. I appreciate the history and honest review of these gemstone techniques. You have written many informative and entertaining blogs. I especially liked the one about Madame Chanel.

You write in a transparent yet authoritative voice, one that invokes trust. And speaking of trust, I also appreciate the Trust Pilot score and accompanying recommendations.

Also, I didn’t know Amazon had such high-end products as the bags/purses you demonstrated. Maybe I didn’t look yet. but now that I did, those cool sunglasses, Costa Anaa green, are a must-have. Seriously.

To begin, I believe I was taken to the home pages and as I began to read it, In my notes, I wrote– I’m in. That’s because, as I said before, everything in this niche excites me. As I explored further I discovered you have put a lot of work into this website and it offers a large inventory of products. The site comes across as high-end, which in my middle class eyes, it is.Yet, there are surprisingly low prices on pieces like the crosses and the crystal jewelry. How fun!

Just a note, primarily on the home page, or the page I was taken to for review, had a number of minor random errors like needing question marks or lack of capital letters in titles.

Thank you for allowing me to do this review and enjoy your website. I think you have something great going on here. I like it. Carry on.

    Yours, Donna (aka Deelilah)

    1. Hello Deelilah, thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your detailed comments. We do appreciate it

It has been a fun website to build and develop. Lett is the fashion major in this duo. Im just the guy who does the research and puts it all together, haha.

Thanks for your review and kind comments. We are so glad that you enjoyed the read.

I have made a note of the corrections you have mentioned and will see to it today, its good to know.

      Take care,

      Lett & William

  8. Hi William, your article was very interesting and informative.
I just knew Swarovski is quality with excellence. Thank you for making it clear why!
My son is a safari guide and has Swarovski binoculars with the best lenses much better than all the others.
Wonderful to know where it comes from and its history, it is such a remarkable product. The clarity is outstanding!
    Kind regards

    1. Estelle, thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your comments, we appreciate it very much.
Yes, you are right, Swarovski crystals are indeed beautiful with a clarity and reflective index very close to that of a diamond. I am not surprised that your sons binoculars have great lenses.
