Perfume has a very rich and ancient history. Have you ever wondered about how some things came to be, like perfume. Where and when was it first discovered, developed and worn as a fragrance, and the biggest question, WHY did past civilizations adorn themselves with it. Perhaps it had some more significant meaning than just to make yourself smell nice. Well, stay with us as we answer these and many other questions about the all too familiar fragrances we see today !

First Things First

Fasten your seat belts, because here we go… before we get into the Top 10 Fragrances for women, would you believe perfumes were first developed and used by the ancient Egyptians. That’s right, way back during the time they were building those pyramids, they were also the first to invent perfumes.  Ramsey

They used it for many religious rights and burials, and also of course to wear for themselves. Many recipes for perfume making have been discovered by archaeologists in Egyptian tombs.

It appears that only the rich and affluent had access to these fragrances which would of course let commoners know of their status.

In the beginning these perfumes were made using an oil base. It wasn’t until many years later that it is believed that the Persians discovered a way to use alcohol as the base rather that oil as we see in our fragrances still today.

It wasn’t long before fragrances began to take hold in Rome and Greece as well where it was used also in beauty products and in bath houses, and soon techniques were developed to extract scents from flowers to be used in the making of perfumes, using coriander, lavender and other highly scented flowers and plants. Evidence suggests that perfume making was done on an industrial scale over 4,000 years ago, WOW !

It wasn’t long before Italy became the Fragrance Capital of the world, especially in Venice. During the renaissance this industry really began to prosper. People began to carry perfume with them in bags, and the idea for “Portable Perfume” began to spread through all of Europe.

Once again, it wasn’t long before fragrances took hold in England during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth the 1st and Henry the VIII, making their way through Russia and eventually to the Americas

There are several types of perfumes available today. It is very important to know what they are and the differences between them so you can select those best suited to you.

Some are very inexpensive while others may almost require a lottery win to purchase. So. WHY the huge discrepancy in consumer cost. Let’s take a little closer look shall we…

* Water based fragrances, sometimes known as “eau de toilette”,  with maybe a 10 – 15% concentration.

* Oil based fragrances. Usually the scent, with a 20% concentration, will last longer throughout the day/evening.

* Perfume “extract” indicating a higher concentration of scent, can be up to 40%. The scented oil has been extracted from the flowers, etc.

*Alcohol based fragrances, called colognes, usually a higher alcohol and lower fragrance concentration therefore is less expensive but doesn’t last as long. These also may dry out the skin.

* Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne and Eau de Fraiche all have a much lower concentration of scent and therefore may only last for 2 or 3 hours.

As I’m sure you realize, the higher concentration of scent will also command a higher price, but of course will last the longest.

  1. Really enjoyed reading the history and types of the fragrances, I do not know that fragrances are invented by Egyptians. Ancient Egyptians used this as a status symbol that only rich can afford. Thanks for mentioning the different types of fragrances and the list of perfumes. As you mentioned at last, many women use perfume not only to smell good but to have good and positive mood.

I found this helpful for purchasing gift for my mother or cousin.

    1. Hi Sujith, thank you so much for your comments, we appreciate it very much. Yes, perfume has a very interesting history indeed. I was as surprised as you to learn of the Egyptian connection when researching for this article.

Yes, I think most of us will feel better about ourselves when we feel good about the way we look, and of course smell. I believe that our level of self confidence will be higher for sure.
